Cloud architect

The cloud architect drives transformation towards a cloud-focused enterprise architecture, takes a leading role in architecting the cloud platform and continually ensures it accommodates the enterprise architecture. The cloud architect helps evangelise cloud usage within the organisation and grows its cloud maturity.

Key competencies

Flexible and eager to learn | keeps track of changes and developments in the cloud area and translates them to the organisation

Strong personal skills | knows how to act and operate at different levels in the organisation (strategic, tactical and operational)

Communication | is able to inspire people in such a way that they take on their advice and turn it into actions

Eye for detail and the big picture | distinguishes between main and side issues and considerably spends time on details

‘Cloud adept’ | commits to evangelising cloud knowledge within the entire organisation

Networking |  is interested in developing and nurturing industry contacts and looks for ways to collaborate with peers

Training and education

A cloud architect meets the following requirements:

  • Bachelor’s and master’s degree
  • Cloud solution architect certified (Azure / AWS)
  • Cloud governance & multi-cloud-native architecture training
  • Microsoft training (AZ-305, DP-201)

Important skills and knowledge

A cloud architect:

  • Has in-depth knowledge of different cloud concepts and follows the development of cloud technology (for IaaS, PaaS and SaaS) closely

  • Preferably has experience in the area of big data, machine learning and IoT within the cloud context

  • Has experience designing architectures for basic cloud environments

  • Can identify business needs and knows to meet them using cloud technology 

  • Has leadership skills, such as innovation and creativity, to contribute to cloud transformations 

  • Has experience with frameworks such as Togaf and Archimate (not required but beneficial)
